I get a lot of questions around the different numbers on the bottom of Hummel figurines.
Can you tell me what the Hummel number (Hum number) is?

Hummel Number Answers
Hummel number (HUM Num) – This is an etched 1 to 4 digit number on the bottom of the Hummel. This number is used to identify what Hummel you have. The Hummel number is used as the main way to identify a Hummel. Every Hummel will have a HUM Num see the image below for more information on this.
The HUM number can also have a Size designator and/or a decoration designator for example HUM 47/III/W
47 = the HUM number
III = the size designator
W = the decoration designator
This article will explain everything about the Hummel numbering system including the designators.
*Note in some cases the HUM number can be hand painted.
Hand painted number – The hand painted number on the bottom of the Hummel is a in factory control number. This number is used in the factory to identify the person that put the soft clay parts together.
The hand painted number is usually a 2 digital number
2nd Etched number – There is sometimes a 2nd etched number this number can mean a few different things.
Sometimes this is a year however it may not be the year the Hummel was made.
This can be one of the following
- Year the base figurine was made
- Year the figurine was released for the first time
- In factory control number
Identifying your Hummel – The HUM number is always used the identify your Hummel. Note in some cases the name of some Hummels has changed over the years, however the HUM number will not.

I have a coin bank that looks like a suitcase with The Merry Wanderer on it, I cant find a number or anything on it. It has the M.J. Hummel logo on the bottom, does anyone know how much it is worth or have any information about it?
